  9. The Privacy Enhanced Mail (PEM) Working Group, Chaired by Steve Kent
  10. (BBN) met for the first time at the Atlanta IETF meeting.  The Working
  11. Group met on Monday and Tuesday afternoon and both sessions were well
  12. attended.  The purpose of these sessions was to discuss unresolved
  13. issues related to the Internet drafts which describe PEM processing and
  14. the proposed PEM key management system.  The goal of this meeting was to
  15. reach consensus on these issues so that revised Internet Drafts could be
  16. issued and the Internet Drafts could progress to RFCs.  A number of the
  17. issues which populated the meeting agenda were articulated in postings
  18. to the PEM mailing list in previous weeks.

  20. During the first session progress was made in resolving an issue related
  21. to PEM message processing details and John Linn (the editor of the
  22. relevant Internet Draft) agreed to make the necessary edits to this
  23. Internet Draft.

  25. There also appeared to be consensus on how to accommodate, in an orderly
  26. fashion, a growing list of distinguished name attributes in PEM
  27. certificates.  The proposal was made to register such attributes, for
  28. use in all Internet applications which make use of distinguished name,
  29. in the periodic IANA RFCs.

  31. Other issues regarding public key management for PEM were discussed
  32. including:
  33.

  35.    o The role of RSADSI in the certification process,
  36.    o Constraints on cross-certification, and
  37.    o Representation of object class identification in certificates.

  40. However, consensus was not achieved in the discussion of these issues
  41. and other contentious topics associated with the key management Internet
  42. Draft were not addressed due to insufficient time over both days of the
  43. PEM Working Group sessions.
  44.  
  45. During the Tuesday afternoon session RSADSI presented proposed
  46. organization and user registration procedures and corresponding legal
  47. documents.  Copies of the organizational agreement were not available
  48. for distribution at the time of the meeting.  RSADSI also described the
  49. proposed agreement for distributing source code for the RSA cryptosystem
  50. as part of a freely available, Internet implementation of PEM. Because
  51. some aspects of this agreement are involved with unresolved issues as
  52. cited above, finalization of the agreement details, etc., will require
  53. resolution of these issues.

  55. As a result of the lack of progress at these Working Group meetings, an

  63. interim meeting was proposed (later in the week) for September 11th at
  64. BBN in Cambridge, MA. This Working Group also expects to convene again
  65. in November at the next IETF meeting.
